Sheet Metal Screws

Sheet Metal Screws

Industrial sheet metal is made of heavy-duty material that cannot typically be fastened with traditional or wooden screws. Primarily used in construction and manufacturing, sheet metal screws are industrial fasteners specifically designed to secure strong sheet metal to other metal objects and other surface materials. Sheet metal screws are recognizable from standard screws by the external threading that covers the entire shank.

Sheet Metal Screw Features

Only a sheet metal screw will provide the necessary hold for some jobs, and different features are available for application. Self-tapping sheet metal screws are ideal for jobs where the holes are pre-drilled, providing fast installation and exceptional holding power. Some self-tapping screws include underhead serration for additional resistance. Industrial sheet metal screws can also be self-drilling. A recognizable feature of self-drilling sheet metal screws is a sharp tip, making it possible to penetrate sheet metal without a pilot hole.

Types & Materials of Sheet Metal Screws

Depending on the job and its requirements, material options, coating options, point types, and head style options should be considered. Using stainless steel for sheet metal screws offers durability and long-term performance. Steel is also an option. Zinc clear coating is available.

Point types should be considered for application, as well. Type A points have coarse threads with gimlet points to fasten wood and thin metals. Type AB points have fine threads with gimlet points, best used for more fragile materials. Type B points utilize blunt tips and spaced threads for various materials, including plastics, plywood, and thin metals.
