Surface Prep Discs
A surface preparation disc is an abrasive product used for cleaning, blending, and surface preparation on a wide range of materials. Commonly used on angle grinders, these discs are ideal for removing rust, corrosion, oxides, paint, and adhesive material while also providing a smooth, controlled finish without excessive material removal.
Surface conditioning discs come in multiple attachment styles, with the most common being Type R (Roll-On) and Type S (Screw-On), depending on the tool being used.
Type R (Roll-On Style)
A Type R surface conditioning disc is designed to roll or twist onto a compatible holder. This style allows for quick and easy disc changes, making it ideal for high-production environments. Type R discs are well-suited for detail work, tight spaces, and light-to-medium surface prep applications.
Type S (Screw-On Style)
A Type S surface conditioning disc features a threaded attachment that screws directly onto a matching backing pad or holder. This provides a more secure connection during heavier applications, reducing movement and improving control under pressure. Type S discs are often used when more aggressive surface conditioning or longer run times are required.
Depending on the application, different grades of surface conditioning discs are available to achieve the desired finish. Coarser discs are best for heavy material removal such as rust and paint, while finer grades are used for blending, finishing, and final surface prep before coating or welding. Surface prep discs come in tan (coarse), red (medium), and blue (very fine).
